The Suhr family’s roots run deep in Venango County, where history and heritage are embedded in the land. For generations, the Suhrs have been closely tied to local philanthropy.
Before his passing in October 2023 at age 91, Henry “Hank” Suhr, Jr. quietly supported a wide range of educational, nonprofit, and charitable causes. His giving was rooted in a deep pride for the region and a firm belief in helping it thrive. He shared this dedication to community with his wife of 67 years, Beverly.
“Hank and Bev believed in giving back. They were raised that way,” said their daughter-in-law, Sarah Stanley Suhr. “They passed that sense of responsibility on to their children and grandchildren.”
Among the causes closest to Hank’s heart was UPMC Northwest. By giving to the Foundation and serving on its board of directors, he helped ensure access to quality care close to home, something he believed was essential to the future of the region.
That belief became deeply personal when Hank and Bev’s son, Douglas, experienced a heart attack several years ago and received care at UPMC Northwest.
“The care Doug received here was outstanding,” his wife Sarah recalled. “The physician and nurses were calm and compassionate, and we could tell they truly cared. He was especially touched that they prayed with us before he was life-flighted.”
Doug later passed away in May 2025 at age 66 following an auto accident caused by a medical emergency. Like his father, he was known for his generosity and willingness to help anyone in need, as well as his technical and business skills and devotion to family. Both Hank and Doug loved spending time together and with Doug’s son Douglas, tinkering or enjoying the great outdoors.
“Hank and Doug both believed that individuals can make a real difference by giving,” said Sarah. “They felt a duty to support the Hospital Foundation so others in our area could receive the same level of care.”
Hank and Doug leave behind Bev, Sarah, Douglas, and the next generation of the Suhr family to carry forward a legacy built on compassion, gratitude, and a steadfast dedication to helping others.
“We are blessed to be able to continue giving,” Sarah said. “It’s an honor to carry on their legacy and support the care that means so much to our community.”
