Investing in Innovation
Investments in life-saving technology ensure that UPMC Northwest stays at the forefront of medical care, utilizing the latest advancements to provide quicker diagnoses, more precise treatments, and improved overall patient outcomes. These technological innovations ensure world-class healthcare is available right here at home.
Recent investments include:
- LigaSure Generator to assist with the removal of fallopian tubes during gynecological surgeries. This device allows the surgeon to remove both fallopian tubes safely and completely by sealing tissues and preventing excessive bleeding. Full removal of the fallopian tubes reduces a patient’s risk of ovarian cancer by approximately 65%.
- StealthStation ENT Navigation System to assist surgeons in precisely navigating the inner workings of the ears, nose, and throat using electromagnetic technology. High-resolution 3D images of a patient’s anatomy allows a surgeon to create a virtual plan of the procedure and map out a path before the operation begins, improving accuracy and reducing surgery times.
- BD Prevue II Vascular Access System portable ultrasound device to facilitate faster and easier IV placement for patients with poor venous access, increasing first-time success rates and reducing placement attempts.
- Medtronic PTeye probe-based parathyroid detection system for use in thyroid and parathyroid surgeries. This device assists with identifying parathyroid tissue in real-time using near-infrared wavelengths to elicit a fluorescent response from the parathyroid tissue with up to 96% accuracy.
- Servo-U MR transport ventilator for managing patient airways during intra-facility transport. This equipment ensures patients can breathe comfortably during transitions within the hospital for various treatments and tests.
