Supporting Care Beyond the Screen: Joe Drelick

While clinical teams care for patients at UPMC Northwest, IT Manager Joe Drelick ensures the technology behind that care never falters. For Joe, it’s more than a job, it’s a personal commitment to keep systems running seamlessly so physicians, nurses, and caregivers can focus fully on their patients.

Joe has served UPMC Northwest for nine years, leading the team responsible for maintaining computer systems across the hospital and its outpatient facilities. What drives him most is helping others. “My favorite part of my job is solving problems for people,” he shared. “It’s incredibly rewarding to know you made someone’s day a little easier.”

Joe’s kind spirit and willingness to lend a hand extends beyond his professional duties. Through payroll deduction, Joe makes ongoing gifts to the Northwest Hospital Foundation in memory of his late uncle, Nick Amore, supporting patients at the Cancer Center.

Joe’s uncle passed away in 2022 at age 69 after battling an aggressive cancer. His generosity left a lasting impression. “He was always giving, always willing to help someone in need,” Joe said. “Honoring him by helping others facing cancer felt like the right thing to do.”

As an employee, Joe finds meaning in knowing exactly where his gifts go. His support stays local, directly benefiting patients and families receiving care at UPMC Northwest. He takes particular pride in supporting programs like the annual Cancer Survivors Picnic, a gathering that celebrates strength, resilience, and hope.

“Even though my uncle never had the chance to attend, I like to think he’s part of it,” Joe reflected. “His memory is there, celebrating alongside every survivor.”

Joe also values the simplicity of giving through UPMC payroll deduction. “Once I enrolled, everything was taken care of,” he said. “I don’t have to think about it, but I know it’s making a real difference. It’s an easy way to have a meaningful impact.”

Outside of work, Joe enjoys spending time at home in Franklin with his wife, Bethany, and their German Shepherd, Bruno.

He encourages fellow employees to consider giving as well. “It’s not often you get to see the direct impact of your support,” Joe said. “Here, you can. That makes it truly worthwhile.”
