Travel Far, Give Close: Bob and Melody McFate

Bob and Melody McFate have spent a lifetime exploring the world. From Eastern and Western Europe to Costa Rica, the Caribbean, Alaska, Hawaii, and much of the Lower 48, they have immersed themselves in a wide range of places and cultures. Yet no matter how far they travel, they always find their way back to Venango County.

For Bob, that connection runs deep. A fifth-generation Venango County resident, he practiced law for 50 years in Oil City, Seneca, and Franklin before retiring at the end of 2023. Melody, a physical therapy assistant, made this her home more than five decades ago. Together, they raised three children here while dedicating their time and energy to causes that strengthen the region, including the Northwest Hospital Foundation.

Their involvement with UPMC Northwest began even before the hospital was built. Following the merger of Oil City and Franklin Hospitals, Bob served on the hospital’s board of directors and later as solicitor for the Foundation. He held that role for many years before passing the torch to his son-in-law, Greg Merkel, in 2019.

What stands out to Bob and Melody about UPMC Northwest is the unique balance: care that is both deeply personal and backed by the strength of a leading health network.

“We’re fortunate to have a hospital where people know you by name, yet you still have access to the same level of care you would find in larger cities,” they shared. “Being part of UPMC means access to specialists, resources, and expertise that would otherwise be out of reach for a rural area.”

In retirement, and in between their travels, the McFates remain committed to giving back. Their continued support of the Northwest Hospital Foundation reflects both gratitude and a clear belief in what strong local healthcare makes possible.

“Quality medical care is essential to sustaining life in a rural community like ours,” they said. “The Foundation plays a vital role in advancing that care. It helps make things possible that would not happen otherwise, and it gives people here a sense of connection to and confidence in their hospital.”

For Bob and Melody, supporting the Foundation is not just about giving back. It is about ensuring the local hospital they cherish remains strong for generations to come.
