Over 300 local cancer survivors and their families gathered at UPMC Northwest on August 6 for a Cancer Survivors Celebration Picnic hosted by the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and sponsored by the Northwest Hospital Foundation. This is the second year in a row that the Cancer Survivors Picnic has been held after a break due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
This year’s carnival-themed picnic celebrated the courage and perseverance of cancer survivors in our community with free popcorn, cotton candy, finger painting, photo booth, picnic dinner, and gift card giveaways.
Guest speakers included UPMC Northwest Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Patient Care Services Kristen Maguire, radiation oncologist Dr. Edward Marchan, and medical physicist Damian Rudder. Dr. Marchan announced that, thanks to a generous gift from donors to the Northwest Hospital Foundation, stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) will soon be available at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at UPMC Northwest. SBRT delivers advanced, highly targeted radiation to tumors.
